It is really hard to watch a friend or a member of your family go through a difficult time, particularly if they are very distressed. You may want to help them but do not know how to or you may feel under pressure to look after them.

What can I do?

  • Let them know that you care and are worried about them
  • Listen to them
  • Take them seriously
  • Tell them that there is help if they want it
  • Listen some more
  • Provide practical help
  • Encourage them to see their doctor or one of the helping agencies in their area
  • Offer to go with them
  • If you are really worried - tell someone. You can't deal with this on your own.

Warning signs to look out for:

  • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Withdrawing into themselves
  • Depression
  • They dwell on problems which they think has no solution.
  • Talking about death or wanting to die
  • Suicide attempts
Always encourage them to get help.
Being a carer:

If you are caring for a relative who has a mental illness you may feel under a lot of pressure. They probably require a lot of support and you may feel tired and mentally drained. Perhaps you have to stay at home to look after them and this means you miss out on school/work, seeing your friends or having a life of your own. Don't try to cope with this on your own. Tell someone you trust. Asking for help does not mean that you care for them any less and in fact it might make things easier for you all.
