In this section we will talk about substance misuse as that covers alcohol, drugs, nicotine or solvents.

Some young people experiment by taking different drugs, many more take alcohol on a regular basis. Perhaps you liked the way the substance made you feel when you first took it and so you keep taking more so as to get the same effect. In the beginning it may make you feel good, more confident and in control. Unfortunately this rarely lasts and you soon have to take more and more of the substance to try and get that same feeling.

Perhaps you started taking substances when you were feeling down or stressed to help you cope. Sadly the substance does not make your problems go away and instead you could make your problems worse by becoming dependant on the substance involved. Alcohol and drugs can also make your mental health worse as they can cause depression, make you paranoid and trigger other serious psychiatric problems or perhaps it has got you into trouble. Are you in debt because of this? Perhaps you are in trouble due to violence or aggression or have had unsafe sex.
